Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually in the United States from September 15 to October 15. It is a time to honor the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and South and Central America.

The observance is rooted in the Civil Rights movement. It began as a week-long event in 1968, and later expanded to a 30-day celebration in 1988. The selection of September 15 as the starting date for the month holds significant for various reasons. It aligns with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Additionally, the independence days of Mexico and Chile fall on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

According to the latest U.S. Census data, the Hispanic or Latinx population reaches 60 million people, making it the largest minority group in the country.

1. Learn why Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated

Combat potentially harmful stereotypes by understanding the cultural and historical context behind Hispanic Heritage Month.

Partner with your Hispanic and Latinx Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to curate a list of informative resources for your employees. These resources can include podcasts, books, films, local or online museum exhibits, and more.

2. Amplify Hispanic voices

Be intentional about amplifying Hispanic and Latinx voices throughout the month. Carve out a space and a time for your team to gather together to learn from experts, artists, and even each other. From listening to a panel of refugees, to participating in an interactive performance, there are many ways to hear from the Hispanic and Latinx community while also contributing to the community.

3. Support Hispanic community members

Volunteer as a team to support the Hispanic and Latinx community. Donating to an organization that supports community members is important, and hosting a hands-on social impact experience can foster a meaningful connection between your employees and the individuals they serve.
